Skansen-Jonas gets to keep the lemurs on his farm on Lisö outside Nynäshamn.

The administrative court has decided that.

– I am not religious, but thank God that there are courts that have common sense in this country, says Jonas Wahlström.

  • The administrative court decides that Jonas Wahlström can keep his ring-tailed lemurs on the farm outside Nynäshamn, despite earlier decisions from the county administrative board that they should be removed.
  • The court finds that some breeding has taken place and that there are no serious animal welfare problems, which means that the lemurs can remain on Wahlström’s farm.
  • Jonas Wahlström expresses great relief and trust in the Swedish justice system, after having the lemurs for 25 years without previous remarks from the authorities.

Skansen-Akvariet’s owner Jonas Wahlström has had ring-tailed lemurs on his farm on Lisö outside Nynäshamn for 25 years, within the framework of Skansen-Akvariet’s zoo permit.

Earlier this year, in March, the county administrative board in Stockholm County decided that the lemurs would no longer be allowed to remain there, because “Skansen-Akvariet neither conducts breeding activities nor public displays” on the farm.

Jonas Wahlström appealed the decision, and now the administrative court in Stockholm has overturned it. The court notes that breeding was carried out, albeit to a low extent, and that the lemurs were not exposed to any serious animal welfare problems. Therefore, the lemurs must remain.

    – This is what I hoped for and actually believed, says Jonas Wahlström and continues:

    – I have had lemurs in full freedom during the entire summer for 25 years. During that time, the Swedish Agency for Agriculture, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the municipality and a number of county veterinarians have been there without any remark whatsoever.

    – Then the county administrative board comes out to inspect and comes to the conclusion that they give an order that I must not keep them. It was probably because Dagens Nyheter claimed that the county administrative board saw through me because I was a private person. To be sure, I am a private person, but here there is a zoo permit that has been issued since 25 years ago.

    – It’s just to state, I’m not religious, but thank God that there are courts that have common sense in this country, says Jonas Wahlström.
