But now the national team captain Jon Dahl Tomasson has done exactly the right thing.

The time has come for a new national team gathering for Sweden. We all know how it went the last time the men’s national team got together to hang out, get to know each other and train together – but above all to win matches.

Sweden won both games that time and had a perfect start to the group stage in the Nations League. But what overshadowed everything was a certain 20-year-old from Svarte, outside Ystad, and how he was treated.

It’s a long way to go and there really are no shortcuts. That a new one will suddenly appear Zlatan Ibrahimovic that takes Swedish football by storm, we probably shouldn’t hope for too much. Unfortunately, that is the grim truth for Swedish national team football.
The conflict with Hugo Larsson however, became a real hen of a small feather and many have had their opinions about the whole infected situation. Certainly Tomasson should have handled it better and kept the criticism internal instead of opening up fully about why he poked the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder, but Larsson could also have shown a little more coolness and professionalism in a vulnerable situation.

I like that Tomasson is clear about what he demands from his players and it will take tough decisions to make Sweden a successful national team again. Now the national team captain has contacted Hugo Larsson personally and together they have straightened out all the irritation that has been simmering.
It is quite right for the Dane to extend a hand and not make this conflict worse. It gives me and all Swedes real hope that Jon Dahl Tomasson is the right man for the job right now and we welcome Hugo back to the national team again, a player who will truly be needed for Sweden.
