Jokeri chairman Mikko Saarni says that there has been talk of freezing Selänte’s shirt, but there is no more precise schedule.
Jokerit, who plays in ice hockey’s Mestis, is settling into its new home hall on Nordenskiöldinkatu.
The Helsinki club will modify the appearance of the arena by raising the club’s championship pennants and frozen game numbers to the ceiling of the hall before Friday’s match against Joensuu Kiekko-Poik.
The ceremony honors the club’s former players Take Janecky, Walter from Immo, Esa from Tikka, Jari Kurria, Petri from Var, Henry Leppää and Timo from Turku.
Petri Varis and Jari Kurri arrive on the scene. The Czech Janecky was also supposed to arrive, but he has a fever
However, the shirt of perhaps the most famous former Jokerit player is still unfrozen. Teemu Selänne was involved in raising the club from the 1st division to the SM league and won the Finnish championship in the Jokerit jersey before his career in the NHL.
The Jokerit hinted at freezing Selänte’s shirt at least around the club’s 50th anniversary in 2017, and the fans have been hoping for it for a long time.
The current president of the club Mikko Saarni says that the freeze has not yet been relevant.
– Last season went quite quickly, and now we are going into the second season, but it has been talked about as a possibility. Nothing more specific has been locked in yet, Saarni told Urheilu.
Jokerit meets Joensuu Kiekko-Pojat at 18:30.
