Johnny Depp’s return to the Cannes Film Festival is controversial

Maïwenn’s film, Jeanne du Barry, was chosen as the opening film of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. This choice was harshly criticized by some spectators and observers, since Johnny Depp is part of the cast. They particularly criticized the event for highlighting the actor, accused of domestic violence by Amber Heard. Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, however, defended himself, arguing that “Johnny Depp won his trial” (for defamation in the United States in 2022, editor’s note). And the movie is not about Johnny Depp.”
