Terry Gilliam, the filmmaker known for sci-fi fever dreams such as Brazil and 12 Monkeys, is about to become just as blasphemous as he was with Monty Python and the Holy Grail. His upcoming creation is called The Carnival at the End of Days and is supposed to be an impious fantasy comedy about heaven and hell.
Johnny Depp will take on the role of the devil, while Jeff Bridges has been chosen for the part of God. However, God may not be so kind in Gilliam’s vision.
Johnny Depp as the devil in fantasy blasphemy: What is Terry Gilliam up to now?
Gilliam revealed to the French film magazine Premiere that his new project is about God wants to destroy humanity again and only Satan himself stands in his way. To continue to have souls for hell, of course. Filming is scheduled for January 2026. In addition to Depp and Bridges as spiritual opponents, Adam Driver and Jason Momoa will also be in front of the camera.
Driver or Momoa could then play the post-biblical Adam2.0 play, because the devil will be looking for a modern Genesis couple to present to God. Now they are looking for a suitable Eve for the reboot of the Garden of Eden.

Directing legend Gilliam works with little budget and even less fear of God on his new film
Gilliam’s last film was The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in 2018. For his latest project, he is working for the first time with up-and-coming screenwriter Christopher Brett Bailey, who so far only has the dreamy drama Dream Agency in his filmography. Despite a relatively low budget of about 30 million US dollarsAs Gilliam stated in an interview with Midi Libre, the filmmaker has a lot planned:
In the film, God is nature. But a nature that can talk to you. I will need animation to bring it to life, because in the scene with God there are at least 15 animals present. It will be complicated, because it has to be realistic. And it will be very expensive! We’ll see how it turns out. But it’s a good script. It will be funny for those who like to get worked up.
A start date has The Carnival at the End of Days Not yet. However, the film is not expected before the end of 2025 or 2026.
