The events of Black Mass are based on true events. In the film from the biopic, Johnny Depp takes on the role of the unrepentant gang boss Whitey Bulger. He grew up with his friend John Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton.
While Bulger pursues a lawless career, Connolly works for the FBI. The two make a pact: The gangster supplies the FBI with information from the Boston underworld. In return, Connolly ensures that Bulger is not pursued by the authorities.
For the crime boss, these are two birds he can kill with one stone: he can build his business unhindered and whistle the competition to the FBI. The system seems perfect, but over time, both sides lose control of the deal.
Black Mass is based on true events
Whitey Bulger existed in real life too. The crime boss’s full name was James Joseph Bulger and he died on October 30, 2018. He was One of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives for 16 years. Bulger was wanted for the following crimes, among others, according to Boston.com:
Johnny Depp’s portrayal is particularly scary because he looks so much like Bulger. His face was plastically changed, to look like the real Bulger. In contrast to his other rather crazy roles, in Black Mass he plays a monster who is capable of numerous misdeeds. That’s why the film is a must-see not only for fans of the actor, but also for everyone who enjoys watching true crime stories.
The Moviepilot community received the film with mixed feelings. On the one hand, the film music, the editing and the camera particularly stand out.
