Do you know John Wick? There is an action thriller on Amazon Prime that offers action cinema that is at least as good. That’s no surprise, as John Wick maker David Leitch directed the film. The leading actress couldn’t be more suitable. Charlize Theron stars as a fierce fighter in 2017’s Atomic Blonde.

An intelligence operation by Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is narrated in flashbacks. The timeline switches between Lorraine’s mission in Berlin and a CIA debriefing room. After an MI6 agent is murdered by a KGB agent, Lorraine is sent to Berlin to retrieve a document.

The murdered agent James Gascoigne had a list with the names of all intelligence officers from both sides. Lorraine is supposed to retrieve this explosive material from the KGB in divided Berlin shortly before the fall of the Wall.

Fight choreography and style are on a par with John Wick

If you played John Wick and Atomic Blonde side by side, they would be Similarities are immediately recognizable. Neon-lit streets, alleys and parking garages. Pop music in really hard action scenes. And extremely long fight scenes that look pretty damn cool. If John Wick were a genre, Atomic Blonde would be the prime example of a John Wick film.

Her investigation takes her through West Berlin in the late 1980s. Contemporary pop from the German new wave accompany the fights with upbeat music to celebrate. Charlize Theron slaps heads, stomachs and between legs to the beat. There’s not much talking here. Wick and Broughton simply have to be siblings.

However, Atomic Blonde brings some very unique innovations to the John Wick genre. It is definitely a true action ballet. Responsible for this is director David Leitch, who gained his first-hand expertise as co-director and stuntman on John Wick. This time the main role is played by Charlize Theron, who has proven herself to be a tough action goddess for many years. Unlike the prudish John Wick, Lorraine actually becomes really tender when she gets to know the young French agent Delphine (Sofia Boutella).

If you haven’t had enough after four John Wick films, Atomic Blonde is the next logical step. On Amazon Prime you can once again be fascinated by brilliantly choreographed action that is in no way inferior to its big brother.
