Cristiano Ronaldo’s tears during the European Round of 16 have been a watershed moment.
Now John Guidetti is being praised for his words about the incident.
– I don’t really understand it, says the former national team player.
It was during Portugal’s round of 16 tie against Slovenia that Cristiano Ronaldo, feverishly searching for his first goal of the tournament, had an opportunity to make it 1-0 in extra time. Diego Jota was brought down in the offensive penalty area, the referee pointed to the penalty spot, but once Ronaldo stepped forward, world goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a monster save.
Burst out in a big cry
When it was time for a short break halfway into extra time, Ronaldo broke down in tears and had to be comforted by his teammates, even though half of extra time remained. The pictures of Ronaldo spread all over the world, and everyone had an opinion about it all. In TV4’s studio, both Mikael Lustig and Hasse Backe said that it had to do with Ronaldo’s enormous ego and that he is a “narcissist”, and the criticism was not kind.
But John Guidetti disagrees. The former national team player, now in AIK, is a guest expert in SVT’s studio during the EC, and came to the world star’s defense during yesterday’s broadcasts.
– Everything he has done… If he goes and misses that penalty kick, Portugal goes out, that’s all people will remember. That’s all they’ll talk about. They will forget when he won European Championship gold. They will forget all Champions League titles. It will just be all the crap thrown at him, says Guidetti in SVT.
Guidetti’s words
John Guidetti believes that the demands placed on Ronaldo compared to other players are almost inhuman, and that he does not understand the criticism of the star.
– He didn’t even have to take that penalty, but everyone will still throw crap at Ronaldo because he is the big star. He can never do right unless he does 100 percent right. If he does one percent wrong, then he does one hundred percent wrong, while everyone else can do one thing right and that’s fantastic, says Guidetti, and continues:
– The level and the demands we set… they know that themselves. He knows that the whole family will be harassed. It will be written on Twitter, everywhere. It is clear that it is lacking.
On social media and around football Sweden, Guidetti was highly praised for his words about Ronaldo, but Jonas Eriksson, who is also an expert at SVT, disagreed.
– I have no problem with the pressure, the stress, him crying and showing emotions. But to do it in the break before the match is over! Afterwards is okay, says Jonas Eriksson.
