Johan Floderu’s trial begins in Iran

The trial against Johan Floderus has begun.
This is confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“The government and the Swedish embassy in Tehran are working very intensively to get Johan Floderus free,” writes Tobias Billström in a statement (M) to TV4 Nyheterna.

Foreign Minister Tobias Billström was informed on Saturday that the trial against the Swedish EU diplomat Johan Floderus has started in Iran.

“Johan Floderus is arbitrarily deprived of his liberty in Iran and he must be released immediately to be able to return to his relatives,” Billström writes in the statement.

He writes that the government and the Swedish embassy in Tehran are working very intensively to get him released and that they will not give up their efforts until he is.

Accused of espionage

33-year-old Floderus has been imprisoned in the notorious Evin prison in Iran since April 2022, accused of espionage.

“There is no basis whatsoever for keeping Johan Floderus in custody, let alone bringing him before a court. Both Sweden and the EU have presented this with great clarity to representatives of Iran,” writes the foreign minister.

It was in May that Kalla fakta was able to reveal that the regime is using Johan Floderus as a hostage. Iran wants to exchange him for Hamid Noury, an Iranian man convicted of murder and serious crimes against humanity by a Swedish court.

“Detained in disgusting conditions”

In November, the indictment was submitted to the court.

– The coin has two sides. We think it is good that the process is moving forward. He has been detained in disgusting conditions for so long. If there is a verdict, he should be able to be transferred to a “public prison” which is freer, said father Matts Floderus to TV4 Nyheterna after the announcement.

How long the trial is expected to last is unclear.
