Johan Cullberg died on Tuesday evening after a short illness, the family tells TT. He turned 88 years old.
It was the brother, the artist Erland Cullberg’s, mental illness that made Johan Cullberg choose psychiatry as a career. In an interview with the magazine Socionomen 2016, he told about how the experiences of his brother’s compulsory care basically shook him. The vision of being able to give even psychotic patients a dignified treatment began then and was then included during a professional life that also resulted in a number of acclaimed books.
In “Creator crises: Strindberg’s inferno and Dagermans” (1992), Johan Cullberg portrayed two Swedish author giants who both went through difficult crises.
