JK Rowling had to make many decisions when writing Harry Potter. She particularly regrets two of them today, even though many fans of the books and films would probably disagree with her.
Spoiler alert: In the article we look at the relationship between two important characters from Harry Potter and the deaths of two others.
JK Rowling invented the complex world of Harry Potter with all its different characters. Over seven books, the characters experienced all sorts of things and developed further. There were numerous decisions to be made while writing, which sometimes had more, sometimes less, impact on the characters. A character had to suffer for years because the author didn’t want to help her.
The last volume, “The Deathly Hallows” was published in 2007, around 18 years ago. Since then, the author has had a lot of time to think about the story. Looking back, she would change a few things, but she particularly regrets two decisions.
A mistake that perhaps isn’t a mistake at all
What does Rowling regret? The first decision concerns the romance between Ron and Hermione. In the later volumes, a stronger, romantic attraction develops between the two, which leads to the wedding.
Hermione and Ron complement each other wonderfully. While he comes across as quite chaotic but brave, she is the sensible and smart one. The combination of Harry Potter and Hermione, which would have been possible, would have been much more colorless, as the two are quite similar. With Ron the contrast to Hermione is simply greater.
So everything is good? No, because Rowling is now dissatisfied with the fact that Hermione and Ron became a couple. She told The Sunday Times it was only for “personal reasons”. It would have simply been in the author’s interest because she wanted to finish the story as originally intended. Credibility didn’t play a big role for the author back then.
Today she regrets it and would do it differently. Presumably Harry and Hermione would end up together, which would have led to a different ending to the story. And possibly to a less interesting couple.
I can understand the anger and rage this may cause among some fans, but if I’m being completely honest, the distance has given me a new perspective. It was a decision I made for very personal reasons, not for credibility.
All in all, Rowling’s “mistake” isn’t that bad, which many fans would agree with. There is a deep friendship between Harry and Hermione, but nothing more. The chemistry between her and Ron is much stronger.
Rowling regrets a second decision: The fate of two characters who bite the dust at the end of Part 7 is even more dramatic. Remus Lupine and Nymphadora Tonks, a couple themselves, die during the Battle of Hogwarts. It’s one of the saddest deaths in the book.
In retrospect, Rowling feels sorry for the decision to let them die, she writes on x.com. But it was probably necessary for the dramatic ending – what’s more, the child of the two characters becomes an orphan, just like Harry.
