In a statement, the Carter Center writes that Jimmy Carter “has decided that the time he has left he wants to spend in his home with his family.”

The Carter Center adds that Carter himself decided on Saturday “after a number of short hospital stays” that he now only wants palliative care, that is, end-of-life care.

Jimmy Carter is fully supported in his decision by his care team and by his family, according to the statement, and “the family now asks that their privacy be respected while expressing gratitude for the care shown by his many admirers.”

Democrat Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States. He took office in 1977 and left office in 1981, when he was succeeded by Republican Ronald Reagan. In 2002, Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Carter, who is 98, was diagnosed in 2015 with liver and brain cancer.
