Jimmie Åkesson proposed to girlfriend Matilda Kärnerup on an Åland cruise.

Now he talks about the nervous minutes before the question was asked.

– It was quite late at night, maybe 03-03.30, he says in Henrik Jönsson’s program “100 percent”.

This summer, Sweden Democrats party leader Jimmie Åkesson, 44, will marry girlfriend Matilda Kärnerup, 28.

The proposal took place on an Åland cruise in March, which he told in an interview with Swedish Women’s Magazine.

– It’s not the most romantic, but it turned out to be very genuine, he said then.

Now the SD leader reveals the details of the courtship in the cabin.

No church wedding

The couple has been together for just under a year. And in the wee hours of a 90s cruise, the party leader made up his mind.

– She heard that I was sitting in this cramped little toilet and mumbling. Then I practiced what to say.

The presenter, right-wing debater Henrik Jönsson, asks if it was drunk.

– Oh, yes. Drunk and drunk, but it was very late at night anyway. She naturally slept first, or half-asleep a little. But it turned out well.

This summer there will be a wedding at home in Sölvesborg.

– It will be in traditional party rooms, not in the church actually. But I had a talk with the priest and he will bring a crucifix, so that it happens according to all the rules of art, he says in the program.

The marriage will be Åkesson’s first. He and former partner Louise Erixon, 34, separated in the spring of 2020 after nine years together. They have a son together.
