Jens Stoltenberg: One thousand billion to Ukraine

A joint NATO fund will guarantee over SEK 1,000 billion to Ukraine over a five-year period.
The proposal comes from Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, pending notification of continued US support.

The new fund is supposed to be financed in the same way as NATO’s relatively small common budget, to which member countries contribute based on how big their GDP is.

The idea is to hold a first discussion about the money during this week’s meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels. Any decision can then be taken at the earliest at the NATO summit in Washington in July.

The support fund is to ensure continued military support to Ukraine in the coming years, regardless of the political changes that take place in the member countries – for example the USA.

Still a long way to go

So far, however, it is unclear whether all countries can accept the plan. For example, the NATO country Hungary in the context of the EU has been strongly opposed to contributing to supporting Ukraine militarily.

– There is still a long way to go. Several member states have questions about how it should work in practice, says a NATO diplomat anonymously to the AFP news agency.

At this week’s NATO meeting, the foreign ministers will also discuss whether NATO can take over parts of the so-called Ramstein Group’s work to coordinate support for Ukraine.
