Jens Lind on the history of football: “The films have been in basement storage”

In April 2019, the company Lind and Svanberg released the acclaimed documentary series The history of hockey on SVT. This spring, it’s time for another look back, this time within the world’s biggest sport.

The history of football is about the sport that grew into Sweden’s national sport and puts it in a societal perspective, with the aim of interest everyone.

Pictures not shown before

– Our challenge is to tell stories so that those who know everything will find it exciting and those who know nothing will also be captivated by it, says Jens Lind.

Well-known events such as the World Cup successes in 1958 and 1994 are highlighted – but so are untold stories and never-before-seen images of major and significant football highlights.

– We will have more material where the main characters have filmed themselves. These films have been in basement storage, says Jens Lind.

Sweden’s first football professional

In addition to the big events, Jens Lind himself was particularly attached to when Sweden got its first football professionals, where Gunnar Nordahl with his transfer to Milan in 1949 was the first.

– The headlines were things like: “Stjärncenter sold itself for SEK 100,000”. That it is a shame, and the Swedish Football Association suspended those who became full-time professionals. They would never get to come home and play football again. Then it changed, but that whole journey is so interesting, he says.

The first two parts (of eight) will be published on SVT Play on Sunday, April 21. Each episode is 30 minutes long.
