The jaw encompasses the two bony arches of the mouth in which the teeth are implanted. Made up of two opposing parts, the jaw is mainly used for gripping, moving and chewing food. Mammals have a lower jaw and an upper jaw. The first serves as a mobile entity which activates the temporal bones. The upper jaw is made up of two bones joined together using a natural suture. In the case of an imperfect suture, we speak of a split palate or cleft lip, two malformations of the jaw and mouth.
