Jason Momoa is becoming one of the toughest DC heroes – but hardly anyone remembers that he was already seen in live action

Jason Momoa is becoming one of the toughest DC heroes

It has finally been clear for a few days now: Jason Momoa will also be part of the new DC universe founded by James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, he can no longer be seen as Aquaman, but as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo. The eccentric comic character will be seen on the big screen for the first time in 2026 in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This is not the first live-action appearance the figure.

Before Jason Momoa: Lobo was in a DC series that hardly anyone remembers

At the beginning of the 2010s, the character from the DC Comics, created in 1983 by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, was to receive a live-action film adaptation, for which Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was even in discussion. However, these plans fell through and he instead turned to another DC character: Black Adam.

In 2019 the time had finally come. The saying-thumping bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia, who is almost immortal thanks to regenerative powers and wiped out his entire species (for fun!), actually made his first live-action appearance. Namely in the series Krypton.

If you don’t remember Krypton, you’re not alone. The Superman prequel about the adventures of Kal-El’s grandfather Seg-El was not well received by audiences at the time and was canceled by the SYFY channel after two seasons. Only those who stuck around until season 2 got to see Lobo.

Actor Emmett J. Scanlan appeared as Lobo for a total of four episodes. His young version of the character lacked the muscles of the DC anti-hero, but impressed with his typical self-absorbed (delusional) wit and a surprisingly strong Irish accent. This was so well received by those responsible for the station that they… even a spin-off series with Lobo had to be developed, but was discarded after the Krypton decommissioning.

Superman: Legacy brings the new DC Universe to cinemas on July 10, 2025, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and with it Jason Momoa’s first appearance as Lobo follows almost a year later on June 25, 2026.
