The 42-year-old suspect is suspected of harboring a grudge against the controversial religious organization.
Japanese prosecutors indicted the former prime minister on Friday Shinzo Abe a murder suspect by Tetsuya Yamagami.
In addition to murder, 42-year-old Yamagami is accused of violating gun laws.
Abe was giving a campaign speech in the city of Nara in July 2022 when he was shot with a homemade gun. Yamagami was arrested at the scene.
Yamagami is suspected of harboring a grudge against the controversial religious organization because the organization had lured his mother into donating the equivalent of more than 700,000 euros to it. Yamagami accused Abe of supporting the organization.
Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister. He resigned from his position in 2020 due to health concerns.
