Japan consumer confidence in January below expectations

Japans services sector down in December

(Tiper Stock Exchange) – Japanese consumer sentiment improves in January.

According to a statement from the Economic and Social Research Institute of the Japanese Cabinet Office, the confidence index stood at 31.1 points, up from 31 in December 2022. The figure however, it is lower than analysts’ expectations who had expected sentiment to rise to 32 points.

Expectations on incomes (+0.6 points) and on the employment situation (+0.8 points) contributed to the improvement in the index, while spending intentions decreased (-0.5 points).

The index therefore still remains below the threshold of 50 points, highlighting the persistence of a negative climate among families of the rising sun.
