What if we gave up hair removal to start 2024 in style? This is the bet of Januhairy, the new challenge which is taking over the networks, which invites women to let their hair grow. How did this movement advocating body positivity begin?
Down with good resolutions and make way for challenges! This is the movement that is taking hold on social networks. The last one that gets people talking: Januhairy which consists of letting your hair grow throughout the month of January in order to accept your body and free women from the dictates of beauty.
Learn to love yourself with your hair
After Dry January, which consists of not drinking a drop of alcohol during the month following the holidays and Veganuary, inviting a vegan lifestyle during the first month of the year, it’s time for Januhairy. A contraction of the English words “january” and “hairy”, this challenge is taking over TikTok and Instagram. Its goal is simple: do not wax during the month of January. We leave the razors, epilators and other wax strips in the closet to proudly display the hair on our body, from the armpits to the legs including the bikini line. It was Laura Jackson, a young Briton, who launched this body positive movement in 2018. During her final year of study at the University of Exeter, she let her hair grow for a performance on body image . “After a while, it was so empowering and liberating to accept andlove something about myself that I was ashamed of“, she told the site The Standardbefore adding “Growing my body hair and accepting that part of myself really opened my eyes, not only to the taboo of body hair on women, but also to the way I view my own body, and I started to love every part of me.” Because that is the goal of this challenge: to learn to love your body in its entirety, without succumbing to the dictates of feminine beauty.
Women take responsibility for their hair
Since the launch of this challenge, publications accompanied by the hashtag #januhairy have exploded, gaining many followers who are not afraid to show off their body hair. Unshaven armpits, growing mustaches, hairy legs and bushy swimsuits : hair is no longer hidden and frees the image of women, stifled for too long by imposed beauty standards. A movement already adopted by several stars who did not hesitate to walk the red carpets displaying their body hair. We count Julia Roberts, Angèle, Paris Jackson and Miley Cyrus among these celebrities breaking the injunctions on female hair.
