Janne Puhakas courage touched hockey expert Topi Nattinen sees

Topi Nättinen hopes that Puhakka, who spoke openly about his homosexuality, will be remembered as a pioneer.

Former ice hockey player Janne Puhakka29, died as a victim of a homicide in Espoo’s Henttaa on Sunday, October 13.

The police are investigating the suspected violent crime as a murder. According to the police, a 65-year-old man suspected of a crime has been arrested in the apartment of a semi-detached house.

Urheilu’s ice hockey expert Top Nättinen is shocked by the news. Nättinen met Puhaka in the puck rinks during his playing years, but also knew him personally.

– Difficult to find words. I would like to convey my deepest condolences to Janne’s family and close friends. Really shocking, sad and horrible.

Five years ago, Puhakka spoke openly about his homosexuality. He was the first player in history who played in the men’s SM league to raise the issue publicly. According to Nättinen, the output was extremely exceptional.

– The first thing that comes to mind about Janne is a role model. His courage opened new doors socially – not only in Finland, but also globally.

Nättinen emphasizes that Puhaka’s openness touched people across genre boundaries.

– Janne was a completely exceptional person both in the hockey community and in the entire sports world. He was so brave. It may not even be understood how great a role model he has been for many.

According to Nättinen, Puhakka was a warm person who was easy for everyone to get along with. He hopes that Puhakka will be remembered not only for his warm nature but also as a pioneer.

– I would like Janne’s courage to be nurtured. Hopefully, there will be new people in the same shoes who dare to defend their own rights and the rights of others.

Puhakka played in Finnish Liiga for Espoo Blues and for Mest in Espoo United and TuTo. Abroad, he played in the North American junior league and at the end of his sports career in the French league. In his youth, Puhakka also played in junior national teams.
