Janne Andersson quits as national team captain

Janne Andersson resigns as national team captain – if the men’s national team does not make it to the EC.
This is stated by the Swedish Football Association.
– My thought is still that we will make it to the EC, says Janne Andersson in a comment.

The Swedish national team has had a tough time in the European Championship qualifiers, and looks set to miss the European Championship finals in Germany in 2024. Sweden is currently third in the qualifying group with seven points to Austria and Belgium in second and first place. As a result, questions have been asked about the future of national team captain Janne Andersson, as his contract expires after the EC playoffs next year.

Now the Swedish Football Association announces that Andersson will leave his position – in the event of a missed EC play-off.

– The only thing that has been in my head is that we are going to the European Championship, but after the loss against Austria there were questions about my future and therefore we want to be clear about what applies, says Andersson on the association’s website.

The announcement means that Janne Andersson can leave as early as November, even though he has a contract until next summer.

Union captain for seven years

Håkan Sjöstrand, general secretary at SvFF, also says that assistant national team captain Peter Wettergren will leave – in the event of a missed EC play-off.

– Janne Andersson has led Sweden to two championships which were of great importance for the men’s national team and Swedish football. But we are not summarizing anything here and now, but we will return to that in the future as we have important matches left to play in the ongoing European Championship qualifiers.

Janne Andersson has been the national team captain for the Swedish men’s national football team since 2016.

The Swedish men’s national team gathers in October for a training match against Moldova on October 12 at Friends Arena and a qualifying match against Belgium away from home on October 16 in the European Championship qualifiers.
