Truls Möregårdh must have lost the Olympic final in table tennis.
But he will always be a blue-yellow hero in our eyes.
Now Jan-Ove Waldner speaks about the opponent’s actions.
During a week’s time, young Truls Möregårdh created total ping pong fever throughout Sweden. It has been many years since our blue and yellow country was a major power in table tennis and it was the first time in 24 years that a Swede reached the Olympic final.
Möregårdh’s success
Möregårdh has really charmed everyone and won many hearts. He has put in an absolutely fantastic effort during the singles tournament in Paris and has exceeded all expectations.

But in the Olympic final it was far too tough and the 22-year-old had to see himself defeated in the end by the Chinese Damn Zhendong. The reigning world champion won the Olympic final on Sunday with a convincing 4-1 in sets, but Truls should be extremely proud of his effort and his impressive Olympic silver.
Waldner’s criticism
Because as he impressed during the course of the tournament and in the final, he offered new entertainment by winning the first set. In addition, Möregårdh offered the big treat of the match when he lobbed the ball up with a strong underhand and completely deceived Zhendong.
– The nice thing about it is that both start tanning there. It would have been Sarah Sjöström who was standing on the other side, because she had only stretched out her arm. He is a little too short, says the legend Jan-Ove Waldner SVT’s Olympic magazine.

But after the Olympic final, the JO directs clear criticism of the Chinese’s strange behavior at that super hit by Truls Möregårdh. Waldner sees it as a huge mistake.
– What he did wrong there… He was still standing. It comes up quite high and you can see that it is under-screwed. Had he just stepped over here (to the side of the table) and just wrapped it. But he stayed, says the Swedish table tennis icon who is a TV expert during the Olympics.
– Then he begins to notice that “I can’t reach it”, because it comes with a screw so that it goes over. Right away, he has to realize that he has to run around and stand on that side. Then he slams it in straight away. But then he starts to tan too and it’s kind of nice.
