Jan-Ove Waldner really loves Truls Möregårdh … just like all other Swedes.
Now the ping pong legend tells why the 23-year-old is so popular.
-Truls goes home in the cabins, he says in an interview with the Östersund Post.
The whole world caught the eye of Truls Möregårdh23, during this summer’s Olympics in Paris when the young Swede took both silver in the singles tournament and in the team competition together with Anton Källberg and Kristian Karlsson. After the success of the championship, the whole of Sweden has been hit by a “Truls fever” that lasts several months later.
Waldner believes in Truls in Europe Top 16
Right now, Smålänningen, who moved from Hovmantorp to Skåne Eslöv with the family as a 12-year-old, is current in the rich tournament Europe Top 16 (formerly Europe Top 12). It has been played since 1971 and has been gained most times by the legends Jan-Ove “yes” Waldner59, and Timo Boll43. They have seven wins each. JO’s latest came in 1996, since then no Swedish has ever won it.

This year both Truls Möregårdh and Anton Källberg are involved.
– Both Truls and Anton (Källberg) have a chance. I think Truls will play well. He has had some time after the Jerring Prize so I think he will do a good tournament now. It is new to him to be so incredibly popular and it takes on the forces. He tries to have full focus but when it takes so much it is difficult to make results-but he is smart so I think he will do well, says Waldner to Östersunds-Posten, who broadcasts the tournament.
Truls Möregårdh goes home with the Swedes
Yes, Truls won the Jerring Prize in January. He is immensely popular in Sweden and has had many children, young people and even adults to start playing ping pong. There is a whole new interest in the sport – something the country has not experienced since Waldner, Jörgen Persson and Mikael “Apple” Appelgren had their heyday in the 80s and 90s.
– Truls goes home in the cabins. He is great – simple and charming – in interviews. And so he is a little different, he plays a lot on variety and joy. He has tremendously good ball mind and game mind, can change blows and is strong when it comes to it. He has never won a big tournament, yet people take him, you don’t have to win to become popular, explains JO.

The legend also thinks that Möregårdh is similar to him in a way. It’s about the 23-year-old like to take out the turns and offer elegant blows.
– He does a bit like I did with my kinds. He has the special blows and it often makes you get a little more space in the media – when you are a small lyricist. What we have in common is that we like to entertain people. I think he wants to make the ping pong more popular. I was also very much based on that it is important that our sport is moving forward, says Jo Waldner.
We love you both, yes and truls! You are fantastic role models for both Swedes and people in the world. Continues to maintain and inspire!
