Swedes will always have a dear place in the heart for Jan-Ove Waldner. This immensely popular and declared genius king of table tennis.
JO is and remains one of Sweden’s greatest athletes ever.

Waldner’s achievements

As a 16-year-old, Waldner broke through when he reached the European Championship final in 1982. However, he lost to his teammate Mikael Appelgren, but there would still be eleven European Championship golds, one of which was in singles for the JO. He also won six World Cup golds and one Olympic gold, to name a few of his achievements.

Waldner is one of the best table tennis players of all time, and is considered by some to be the very best. The 58-year-old is to this day the only one from a non-Asian country to have won an Olympic gold medal in table tennis.
During the year, JO worked with its own table tennis tournament “Waldner Cup”. However, it was forced to be postponed for a year due to hectic playing schedule.
