Jan Löfving: The police leadership not welcome to the funeral

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Late on Wednesday evening came the news that police chief Mats Löfving had been found dead in his home in Norrköping. On the same day, investigator Runar Viksten presented his report at a press conference. The conclusion of the report was that Mats Löfving was bad in four cases concerning decisions regarding Linda Staaf. However, Viksten does not consider that there was any wrongdoing when Staaf was given the position of head of intelligence in 2015. Viksten recommended the national police chief to consider dismissing Löfving or removing him from the chief position.

The brother about grief

Now Mats Löfving’s brother Jan Löfving talks about the sadness after the announcement in Efter fem.

– He was not only a brother but a fantastic comrade, he says in the programme.

Jan Löfving believes that Mats Löving had no problems with the investigation, but that the dismantling of him as a person was difficult for the whole family.

– He said on one occasion to mother that they have taken my honor from me.

Police management not welcome to the funeral

Jan Löfving believes that all the important work that Mats has done as a police officer has been overshadowed by what happened. And he feels anger that the police leadership and the HR department did not do more to support the brother. Lately, he watched his brother become a different person.

– He changed drastically.

Now the family is preparing a funeral, which is planned to be bigger than just those closest to them.

– But I hope that the management understands that it is not dignified that they come to the funeral.

In the player above, Jan tells the last time before Mat’s death – and how he saw his brother slowly changing.

Facts: The investigator’s conclusions

The police chief, Mats Löfving, was not squeamish when he appointed Linda Staaf as head of intelligence at the National Operative Department (Noa). In four decisions that Löfving made, the investigator Runar Viksten assesses that he was tough: When Linda Staaf was assigned a service weapon. When Löfving gave her a pay rise. When he approved her sideline as a writer. When Linda Staaf’s chief appointment was extended by Löfving. Viksten considers all the decisions to be correct in substance, but that they should not have been made by Löfving, because of differences. Löfving and Staaf had a relationship from 2015 until 2021, according to Viksten’s investigation.
