Zack Snyder’s Superman film Man of Steel and the resulting DC film universe disappointed me at the time and later completely lost me. After the first teaser trailers in summer 2012, I still had big expectations of the long overdue Superman reboot after the really boring Superman Returns from 2006. And Jor-El were exactly my taste. In addition, Superman thundered through the sky and promised that this film would bring Superman to the cinema perfectly.
The staff convinced: Christopher Nolan produced, David S. Goyer writes and stages synder. What should go wrong? Unfortunately everything.
Zack Snyders Man of Steel was not my Superman
Man of Steel did not meet their own trailers or the idea of Superman. Instead of saving cats from the tree, Superman put half metropolis in rubble and ash. Instead of being a form of light for humanity, this “hero” broke the neck of his adversary. Instead of a symbol of hope we got one Symbol of destruction. Thanks, no, I don’t need it. Accordingly, I went to the cinema three years later and gave Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice a chance. It only got worse. Someware of pee glasses, mums of the same name and CrossFit montages somewhere between the plot, Zack Snyder broke my heart.
I found “my” Superman at DC at most in the form of Wonder Woman or the first Shazam! again. The rest of the superhero: Inside genre often tried and would like to try the concept of a “evil” superman that was already buried at the time, which only gave me a tired yawn. Only James Gunn could awaken me from my sleeping beauty. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 initially made me curious how his Superman could look like. The first Teaser trailer I immediately convinced me for his new Superman.
Three details prove that he understands Superman much better than Zack Snyder:
1. The Superman costume is finally back
Superman wears his red panties over the blue pants and that’s a good thing. While Henry Cavill in Man of Steel has a mixture of family uniform and war armor, David Corenswet is finally allowed to The iconic Superman costume put on. The red trousers and the yellow belt break up the monotonous blue of the rest of the suit. The other colors shine vigorously and confidently. The costume is representative of Gunn’s entire production. Instead of wanting to reinvent Superman like MAN of Steel, this Superman radiates refreshing self -confidence.
Superman has never been as “cool” and “dark” like Iron Man or Batman, but that’s the jumping point at this sci-fi fantasy figure. Superman should not be an identification figure for us in the audience, but an inspiration for virtues such as truth, justice and helpfulness. All of this is in the symbol on its chest and also in the red panties above the costume. This is silly, that’s “uncool”, that is the opposite of many other superhero: inside. And that is exactly what James Gunn seems to have understood.

2. James Gunn does his homework as far as the music is concerned
Do not understand: Superman is anything but carved and unchangeable! The figure could not fly in the first comic appearances. It was only in the radio play game from the 1940s that he developed a weakness for cryptonite. The S as a symbol of hope is an invention by the comic author Mark Waid from 2004. Like every myth, the various Superman narratives of the fresh composition of old and new ideas live. With every new count, the question arises as to what belongs from past incarnations in the present. With his selection of music, James Gunn not only proves taste, but exactly this feeling for the right mix of tradition and innovation.
The soundtrack for its first teaser grabs the iconic Theme song by John Williams To the Superman film from 1978, slowed him down, get him out of the orchestra and brings him to the electric guitar. In doing so, he refers to tradition, confirms its meaning and brings them fresh to the present. Snyder’s spasmodic break with almost all Superman conventions of the past is history. Williams’ Superman score is just as iconic as his work for Star Wars or Indiana Jones. So it sounds easy when we see Superman.
3. Crypto proves how unconventional this superman will be
In the comics, really strange stuff around Superman happened in the course of over 80 years of publication history. In a story, not only Kal-El landed on earth and became too Superman: a doppelganger baby was in the rescue capsule next to him and, thanks to gangster parents, developed into a mask-bearing super villain. In another story from the 1950s, Superman lost almost all of the strength and was able to shoot rainbow rays out of his hands instead. Comics in general and Superman comics in particular have come up with the most absurd ideas, characters and action.
That’s why I’m all the more pleased that James Gunn Supermans Super petual cryptowho can also fly and is invulnerable, immersed in the comic templates when Zack Snyders Man of Steel dipped. Gunn once again reached deep into the sugar -sweet pet box and presents us with a particularly cute sidekick that is already conquering the hearts of fans.
With his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, the filmmaker demonstrated that he can present us-speaking raccoons and trees so that they grow properly. This gives hope that James Gunn will bring more unusual and surprising aspects of Superman mythology to the big screen.
The new Superman film will be flown to German cinemas on July 10, 2025.
