James Gunn describes his vision for the greatest of all

In news that comes as no surprise to anyone, DC boss James Gunn (The Suicide Squad) has signed on to direct the new blockbuster, Superman: Legacy, in addition to writing the script. More interesting is his unexpectedly touching statement about the film, which will do without the previous Superman Henry Cavill.

This is how James Gunn describes his new DC blockbuster Superman: Legacy

It was already known that Gunn was writing the script for the Superman reboot. Yesterday, the new head of the DC Universe confirmed in a Twitter thread that he’s taking on the directing job. In it, Gunn connects the memory of his father with the origin of his new film hero Kal-El or Clark Kent. But read for yourself:

Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy, which hits theaters on July 11, 2025. When my brother Matt saw the appointment, he started crying. I asked him why. He said, ‘Man, it’s dad’s birthday’. I hadn’t realized that.
I lost my father almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid but supported my love for comics and movies and without him I wouldn’t be making this film.
I have a long way to go. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially turned it down because I didn’t have an approach that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.
About a year ago I have an approach [für einen Superman-Film] found, which in some ways revolves around Superman’s origins – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents influence who he is and the decisions he makes.

Gunn goes on to explain that he hesitated at first to direct the film, but eventually took on the job.

Superman: Legacy will be Chapter 1 of a new DC Universe – minus Henry Cavill

At the end of January, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the two new heads of DC Studios, announced their plan for the future of the comic universe in cinema and television. At the beginning of the first phase, which was titled “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” is Superman: Legacy, launching in Summer 2025.

This first chapter represents a new beginning after years of the so-called DC Extended Universe. This also applies to the casting of Superman. Gunn has already ruled out the return of former Man of Steel Henry Cavill. His Superman is believed to be well under 40 (Cavill is 39). However, it is not yet known who will play it.
