Spielberg and Cameron sat down for the opening episode of the James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction documentary series, which IndieWire quotes from. Steven Spielberg explains it was the first film where he had anything like a religious experience. And Cameron reports:
I’ve been to the cinema 18 times. Once a guy ran down the aisle screaming, “It’s God, it’s God!” And he meant it.
2001 can hardly be underestimated in its effect and importance for film history. In an extremely prestigious list of the best films of all time, it still comes in at number 6 and thus represents the best sci-fi film. The list of prominent fans and imitators is endless. Both Spielberg’s and Cameron’s career successes would be hard to imagine without Kubrick’s exceptional film.
