Jabeur makes more semi-final history in the US Open

The Tunisian Ons Jabeur made it to the Wimbledon final earlier this summer. Once there she lost to Jelena Rybakina but only the semi-final was historic as no African woman even made it to the top four of a grand slam.

Now the world number five has repeated that feat after winning in two straight sets, 6–4, 7–6 (7–4), in the quarterfinals of the US Open against 46th-ranked Tomljanovic.

The 29-year-old Australian had earlier in the tournament proved to be a solid opponent when she knocked out Serena Williams, in what may very well have been the world star’s last tennis match of her career.

— Maybe it didn’t look like I was particularly happy on the court, but I really just tried not to get frustrated. It’s tough to face players as physical as Ajla, I just tried to focus to do the job that was required, says Jabeur to Eurosport after the match

In the semifinals, the winner between French Caroline Garcia and American starlet Coco Gauff now awaits for Jabeur.

Earlier this summer, Gauff became the youngest grand slam finalist at 18 when she reached the final of the French Championships, just 18 years old.

The first serve in that meeting will be served at 01.00 tonight.

Corrected: In an earlier version, Gauff’s playing history was incorrectly described.
