The doctors realized their mistake in the 7th month of pregnancy, during genetic tests on the baby. The surrogate mother and the biological mother are devastated by this impossible situation.
It is a nightmare worthy of a movie or a novel, but nevertheless very real, which is currently tearing two families in Israel apart. Doctors at Assuta Hospital in Rishon Lezion in 2021 made an embryo implantation mistake during IVF. The case dates from the fall of 2021, but only recently came to light.
A revealing genetic test at the end of pregnancy
In 2021, therefore, doctors at Assuta Hospital in Rishon Lezion, a facility that has one of Israel’s most popular in vitro fertilization services, implant a woman with an embryo from, as required by the procedure. , from one of her eggs and fertilized in the laboratory with a sperm from her husband. Nothing indicates any concern. Pregnancy continues normally, until a heart abnormality is detected in the future unborn baby. But, thanks to an intrauterine intervention, everything is back to normal.
However, in the 7th month of pregnancy, genetic tests are carried out, and unequivocally reveal the absence of a link between the fetus and the couple having carried out the IVF: the baby which has developed in the womb of its mother is not just not their child.
NO to diets, YES to WW!
Two frightened families
For the two families in question, an inextricable situation then arises. The family that was expecting the child is upset, the father confided on this subject to the international point : “We can’t believe it! Especially my wife whose answer is unequivocal: it’s her baby; no one will take it from him.”
For its part, the biological family is also in all its states: “The mere thought that this is my baby in another woman’s womb, while my husband and I are in this very difficult process of bringing a child into the world, that thought is a real torture” evokes the wife.
Who has the right to raise this child? An investigation has been opened by the country’s Ministry of Health. Abroad, there are two similar cases, which have been the subject of different court decisions: in the United States, the judges ruled in favor of the surrogate mother; in Europe, for the biological mother.
