A hobbyist impresses the assembled community of PC builders on Reddit: He has built a modern PC in the case of a PlayStation 1. Maybe he did this because he is an amateur and had no idea how difficult the task would be. Because for experienced hobbyists the task seems impossible: there is simply not enough space in the PS1.
This is what the hobbyist says: Shortly after Christmas, a proud father published a post on the Reddit “PC Masterrace”: He had built his first PC, which he gave to his son for Christmas. He says he’s now happy with the results after getting the heat issues under control by running his GPU at lower volts than intended.
His son didn’t even know what a PS1 was. He explained to him that this was the great-great-great-grandfather of the PS5. But all that mattered to his son was that he now had access to a PC – the fact that the PC came in a PS1 didn’t seem to matter to him at all. The father probably did this more as a joke for himself.
The PlayStation is an iconic console in gaming history:
Hobbyist says this is his first home-built PC
Has he done anything like this before? No, he says that up to now he has always put together the parts for the PC and then had them assembled in a shop. In any case, he has primarily used laptops over the last 25 years.
But he has previously upgraded PCs by installing new graphics cards or RAM.
The man says he bought the parts on a gamble, hoping that everything would fit – and is now happy that his bet has paid off.
Construction costs around €850
What’s in the PC? The Spanish site 3dJuegos lists the components:
At 3D Juegos it is estimated that the hardware costs around 850. The case, the PS1, is available for around €30.
On Reddit, the hobbyist patiently answers many detailed questions from the community about which graphics card he used and how it all fits into the narrow case of the PS1. He used a lot of “Frankenstein” parts, he says: things and brands that were intended for laptops or mini PCs.
“That shouldn’t be possible”
These are the comments: The community is very impressed and can hardly believe that it is the hobbyist’s first PC, because the lack of space that the idea entails is crazy, according to the experts:
For some, building PCs is more than a hobby, but a calling. We regularly report on particularly impressive or imaginative constructions on MeinMMO: Hobbyist shows his self-built suitcase PC for 1,400 euros, using an indestructible housing
