its well and truly cancelled MGM has lost the rights

Alicia Vikander’s alarmist remarks a week ago about the probable abandonment of Tom Raider 2 were legitimate, since we have just learned that MGM has lost the license rights for the cinema. It was the online magazine The Wrap that released the scoop, specifying that with the takeover of MGM by Amazon, it was the company Embracer Group which recovered the rights to the franchise. It’s not really a surprise, since Square Enix got rid of its Western branch last May, including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal. The movie rights to the Tomb Raider franchise are now in the hands of Embracer Group, who have teamed up with production company GK Film to try and bring something of Lara Croft to the movies. According to The Wrap, Graham King (who heads GK Film) has started an auction to survey the film industry to find out who would be interested in reviving the franchise in theaters. In the meantime, Alicia Vikander now seems detached from the role of Lara Croft and it is not forbidden for a new actress to be cast in her place if Tomb Raider returns to the cinema.
