It’s raining large hailstones here – in the middle of the heat wave

At least 110 people were injured when an extreme storm with large clumps of hail swept across northern Italy. The storm swept across the northern parts of the country between Wednesday and Friday. On the night of Wednesday, the emergency services in Veneto, northern Italy, received more than 500 alarm calls about hail balls – some 10 centimeters in diameter – causing injuries and damage to property.

“This wave of bad weather swept down from the mountain areas into the plains, and several people have been injured,” said Venice regional president Luca Zaia, adding that most of the injuries were caused by people slipping on the hail or cutting themselves on broken glass.

Rounds of extreme weather

In Seregna in Milan, the storm swept in on Friday and caused an ice-mixed torrent through the district.

At the same time, temperatures in Sicily in southern Italy are measured at upwards of 45 degrees and people are warned not to go out in the heat during the day, while hospital admissions have increased by 20 percent, local media reports.

On Tuesday, a new heat record was broken in Rome at 41 degrees in the shade, and last May Italy was plagued by floods.
