There’s a lot in store for die-hard Lord of the Rings fans. While Amazon is already working on the third season of the series The Rings of Power, Warner Bros. is busy returning to Middle-earth in the cinema. In addition to the anime The Battle of the Rohirrim starting this year (film release: December 12th), this will primarily happen with the film The Hunt for Gollum. But that’s not the end of the new Tolkien adventures on the big screen.
Fantasy anticipation at its finest: Another Lord of the Rings film is in the works
Philippa Boyens was an important part of director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film series as a producer and screenwriter. Now she is back on the team at Warner Bros. and is helping, among other things, to get the planned Gollum adventure off the ground. This week she cleared up a misunderstanding with Empire, as it was rumored to consist of two parts.
I can definitely tell you that there are not two films! That was an honest misunderstanding that happened because we started conceptually, to work on two different live-action films. The first will be The Hunt for Gollum, the second is yet to be confirmed.
Given the extensive legendarium JRR Tolkien left us, we don’t even want to begin speculating where this mysterious second film might take us. There are literally multiple eras and countless templates available for adaptation, from the Silmarillion to even more obscure mentions in the additional texts. The only question is what Warner has the rights to.
Depending on the success of The Battle of the Rohirrim, the next film could also be another animated project. At least that’s what it sounds like when Boyens says the following:
We have an absolute bombshell of a second film that just would be incredible as an anime. But let’s see if there’s an appetite for it.
A connecting link between the new projects could be the wizard Gandalf, who could even appear again in the form of Ian McKellen.
