The European Commission is asking the messaging service to answer the remaining questions about respect for consumer privacy.
WhatsApp has just received a new letter from the European Commission and CPC, the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network. The latter believe that the messaging service is not sufficiently explicit about its data policy. She has one month to clarify the situation.
Does WhatsApp earn revenue by mining user data?
Specifically, WhatsApp is going to have to make it clear how it will communicate the terms of future updates to its terms in the future. An essential prerequisite for users to decide freely whether they want to continue using the application. It is also required to declare whether it derives revenue from the exploitation of consumer data.
“WhatsApp must ensure that users understand what they are agreeing to and how their personal data is used for business purposes, in particular to provide services to business partners. I repeat that I expect WhatsApp to fully comply with EU rules that protect consumers and their fundamental rights,” said Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders.

A case that has been going on since 2021
This is not the first letter WhatsApp has received. Messaging had already been called to order last January for updates made in 2021. We remember the outcry aroused among users when the application announced that it was going to share their data with Facebook, two companies belonging to the same Meta group.
Failing acceptance of these new conditions, it threatened to degrade the use of messaging. Some then left WhatsApp in protest. However, this decision did not ultimately apply to European nationals.
