Every year, a film gets people talking at the Cannes Film Festival for its trashy or transgressive side, whether it’s good or bad. If Megalopolis by Francis Ford Coppola tore up the critics, another film made a strong impression during this 2024 edition, but by provoking the support of festival-goers and the press thanks to its strong proposition, whether from a visual or narrative point of view. This film is The Substance.
Directed by the French Coralie Fargeat, this horror movie with Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid was one of the big hits of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, so much so that it won the Best Screenplay Award. The Substance tells the story of a declining actress who decides to ingest a product that allows her to generate a younger version of herself, and to share time between these two versions every other week.
