The colony simulation RimWorld is one of the best rated games on Steam. Out of over 151,000 reviews, 98% are positive. The sandbox tells fantastic stories. Now the boss has announced: There is a 4th expansion coming.
What is RimWorld?
After expansions in 2020, 2021 and 2022, which already significantly expanded the base game, a 4th expansion has now been announced.
This is what we know about expansion: Nearly nothing. RimWorld creator Tynan Sylvester simply posted a picture of a woman on Twitter and the phrase “It will awaken…”.
There is no release date for the expansion or what features are yet to come.
Many are waiting for the 3 other DLCs to come onto the Steam sale
How is this discussed? In fact, the reactions on Reddit are somewhat mixed.
Some people say: RimWorld is such a blast in itself that people haven’t bought any DLCs yet. We would have spent 300 hours on the basic game. People are waiting for a sale for the DLCs – but RimWorld simply never goes on sale on Steam.
It is actually the case that the prices for RimWorld DLCs are relatively stable. The two older DLCs “only” went down by 10%. The latest DLC Biotech from November 2022 wasn’t even on offer yet. RimWorld itself also only reduces its price by 20% during a sale – the developers are pretty tough here.
Others who view the DLC more critically are primarily worried that it will break thousands of mods that will all have to be re-released.
But there are also people who are looking forward to the DLC and say that they will sink another 100 hours into RimWorld:
DLCs for RimWorld are a surprise package and develop the game unpredictably
That’s why this is special: The “DLCs” in RimWorld have a lot of meat and bring new game elements to RimWorld that you couldn’t expect.
RimWorld is, at its core, an innovative and crazy game that has been expanded in every possible direction. With the last DLC, animal-human mutants such as pig people, genetic manipulation, but also vampires came to RimWorld.
Who knows what the crazy geniuses behind RimWorld will come up with this time.
Many people are put off by RimWorld at first glance because – as the spiritual successor to Dwarf Fortress – it uses some unusual game mechanics that you have to get used to, such as a prioritized task table or precise automation permissions or schedules.
However, once you have learned and understood the systems at RimWorld, you can expect an unusually deep and exciting gaming experience.
