Nicknamed the “Pearl of Lake Geneva”, this village in Haute-Savoie is a gem you absolutely must visit.
Haute-Savoie is known to be a true paradise for lake lovers. It is also full of historical gems that seem frozen in time, offering an extraordinary journey. Are you looking for a memorable getaway in the area? Embark with us in one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Castle, cobbled streets, ramparts and flower garden… Welcome to the only village in Haute-Savoie classified among the “Most beautiful villages in France”. This former fishing village and former 14th century fortress offers not only an irresistible view of Lake Geneva but also medieval architecture and a unique flower garden which has retained beautiful remains of its past.
Yvoire, nicknamed the “pearl of Lake Geneva”, has the major advantage of combining a charming medieval heritage with the dolce vita of a lakeside city. Located very close to Switzerland, 40 minutes from Évian-les-Bains and 45 minutes from Geneva by car, its treasures are revealed during a half-day stroll. You enter through one of its fortified gates, the Rovorée gate, which was built by the Count of Savoy Amédée V and has since been classified as a “Historic Monument”. Along its winding streets, we discover magnificent stone houses with wooden balconies decorated with wisteria and geraniums. Don’t miss Place du Thay and its wine press, which once served as the central point of the village. From there, we admire the Saint Pancrace church and its pretty, very characteristic onion bell tower.
We then go to see the old small fishing port, authentic and historic, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains. Then we reach the castle, of which only the keep and the surrounding wall remain. From there, we will go down to the Grand Port. Built at the end of the 19th century, it allows you to set sail with the steamboat “Belle Époque”. In winter, the famous “black kiss” freezes the banks of Yvoire which are then covered with ice, a treat for the amateur photographers and videographers.
By taking the Grande Rue, the main artery of the small town bustling with numerous small shops, you reach the Jardin des 5 Sens, a must-see classified as a “Remarkable Garden” by the Ministry of Culture. Arranged as a plant labyrinth in one of the castle’s vegetable gardens, it invites the visitor, young or old, to discover a relaxing and colorful world made of scents, colors, tastes and textures, each more surprising than the next, while inspired by the art of medieval gardens. We come across many species of flowers and plants, as well as trees, all generally decorated with small ponds and statues.
All the wonders of this exceptional village in Haute-Savoie are waiting for you. Peaceful and romantic atmosphere guaranteed during your winter stay… Go for it!
