“It’s a mystery to me”

IFK Gothenburg has been slow in recent years.
Blue and white icon Thomas Ravelli has a proposal for a measure.
– As we did in the 90s, he tells Sportbibeln.

Thomas Ravelli64, played for IFK Göteborg between 1989 and 1997. During those years, the former goalkeeper won six SM golds with the club, and they qualified for the Champions League group stage three times.

Ravelli about Blåvitt

The last few years have not been as successful for IFK Gothenburg. The club has finished outside the top six every season since 2017. The bottom note came in 2020 when the team finished in twelfth place. This season, Blåvitt has at worst been down to the relegation zone, but has now lifted and is in tenth place.

Thomas Ravelli finds it difficult to explain the lift.
– To have now all of a sudden scored so many points and played such good football, it’s a mystery to me. I can’t answer that, and probably no one can either. How it can turn in this way as it has now, he tells Sportbibeln.

Compare with MFF

Blåvittikonen, on the other hand, has a theory as to why things went so slowly before liftoff.
– All of a sudden they have started winning matches. They may have brought in one or two players who may have lifted the team. But if a team doesn’t work for a longer period, it still has to do with the coach and management and that you buy the wrong players.

A team that did not have its best season last year was Malmö FF, who before that lined up successes. They have also faltered during the current season, but after some good results have taken over the lead in the Allsvenskan.
– Look at Malmö, they have also had problems. They have huge wallets and can buy almost any player. Although they have played quite poorly for a number of months, they are now leading the series and it is thanks to this width they have, says Ravelli when he compares Malmö and IFK Gothenburg.

Thomas’ suggestion

For Blåvitt to find his way back to the right notes, Ravelli believes the team must look back to his time and their approach.
– In the end, it’s about trying to build a team with young people from our own ranks, as we perhaps did in the 90s, early 90s.

– We had 2-3 established players, including me, and Pontus Kåmark, Kenneth (Andersson). They were in and of themselves quite young, too, but. Then we built on that. And the team was built in such a way that young guys came in who then developed and became incredibly talented, says Thomas Ravelli.
