Italy Ukraine Urso important agreements on steel and critical raw materials

(Finance) – Collaborate with the government Ukrainian within the scope of critical raw materials and of related supply chains. Accelerate the industrial redevelopment of Piombino with the large green steel production plant, thanks to the investment from Metinvest.

These are the topics at the center of the two statements joint which were signed by the Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, as part of the Italy-Ukraine Business Forum. The event, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with the ICE Agency and the Ukrainian Ministry of Economy, is part of the process of approaching the Conference on Resilience of Ukrainescheduled for 10 and 11 July 2025 in Rome.

The joint statement on critical raw materials, signed by Urso and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, Julia Svyrydenkoaims to promote a continuous exchange of opinions, information, good practices and joint research, encouraging the adoption of safe and sustainable practices for the strategic autonomy of the two countries in this sector. The agreement also provides a collaboration strengthened in the relevant production chains, divided into four main areas: strengthening the value chains of critical raw materials, international cooperation, development of research and innovation, and resource mapping and exploration activities.

“A central aspect of the partnership between Italy and Ukraine is to guarantee the supply of critical raw materials, indispensable to ensure the strategic autonomy of the industry, especially in a context marked by over two years of conflict on Ukrainian soil. This initiative represents a duty towards the Ukrainian people, to whom we want to restore hope in peace, a peace that is built every day by supporting the country in the defense of its freedom. Italy, which has always been one of Ukraine’s main industrial partners in strategic sectors, as confirmed by the agreement signed today, we will continue to be at your side also in the reconstruction and production relaunch”, declared the minister Ursus.

The joint declaration signed by Mimit And Metinvestwhich is part of the broader framework of relaunching the steel industry Piombinoconcerns the construction of the production site of thesteel technologically cutting-edge and with low environmental impact, worth 2.5 billion eurosby the Ukrainian Group.

The plant, with a planned capacity of 2.7 million tons per yearwill be used for the production of hot rolled coilssubject to further processing, obtained from the transformation of ferrous materials, such as steel scrap, cast iron, pre-reduced iron from Ukraine.

“This signing marks a further step for the steel industry Italian on the road to production recovery with green technology. In Piombino we carried out a win-win action: on the one hand we kept a promise made to the territory for the development of the industrial area and the maintenance, if not even the increase, of jobs and an important training project. On the other hand, we have signed a partnerships with Ukraine in the sign of peace and friendship that binds us to this people”, concluded Minister Urso.
