Italy is Europe’s first gateway to the Mediterranean. Last year, 67,000 exiles landed on its shores. Of the five million migrants and refugees living in Italy, half are women. Some arrive tested by a past of violence. These traumatic victims are welcomed and protected by a network of associations of centers reserved for migrant women who support them in their reconstruction. Often fleeing their country alone, most of these exiles come from the Balkans, but also from Africa, the Middle East or Asia.
