Stating that it is possible to start the first day of the new year more comfortably and healthily with simple and effective measures that can be taken after the New Year, Yeditepe University Kozyatağı Hospital Nutrition and Diet Specialist Harika Özkaya Yurttadur made suggestions that will purify toxins from our body, reduce swelling and ease digestion.
START THE DAY WITH PLENTY OF WATER
Dyt explains that water, which has always been indispensable for the body, is even more important today. Yurttatur said, “When you wake up in the morning, the thing your body needs most will be water. He may have been dehydrated on New Year’s Eve due to both excess salt and alcohol. Therefore, start the day by drinking 1-2 glasses of warm lemon water and try to consume at least 2.5 liters of water throughout the day. Adding mint, cinnamon and lemon to it can help you consume water more easily. “In this way, your digestion will be relieved and you can reduce your payment more easily,” he said.
HAVE A LIGHT AND BALANCED BREAKFAST
Dyt explains that when having breakfast the next day, you should have a light breakfast that rests your stomach. Yurttatur suggested the following:
“A boiled egg and a slice of whole wheat bread with a green salad can be a good option. Additionally, you can also choose porridge garnished with fruit and raw almonds or walnuts. “Yoghurt and kefir can also be added to breakfast for intestinal health.”
MAKE YOUR MEAL CONTENTS LIGHT
Dyt says that it will also be beneficial if the meal contents are light during the day. Yurttadur said, “If you consumed foods with high energy, salt and carbohydrate content the previous evening, complete your meals with less salty and lighter foods during the day. Eat balanced and adequate meals without starving yourself. To support digestion, well-cooked vegetables, plenty of green salad, as well as low-fat proteins such as eggs and fish, can be included in main meals. “You can choose yoghurt, oats, fresh fruits and raw nuts for snacks,” he said.
LIMIT SALT CONSUMPTION, STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR
Reminding that excessive salty foods consumed on New Year’s Eve are one of the most important causes of edema the next day, Dyt said. Yurttadur said, “To prevent this, one should avoid adding too much salt to meals the next day. Salty products should not be consumed. Additionally, it is best to stay away from sugary desserts or products today. “One or two fruits such as dates or apricots can be preferred to satisfy the sweet need,” he said.
GET SUPPORT FROM HERBAL TEA
Dyt. Yurttadur said, “Herbal teas can be beneficial in both relieving edema and relieving digestion. Herbal teas such as fennel, ginger, green tea and linden, which help relieve edema, support your digestion and reduce bloating. “You can also relax your stomach with mint tea, balance your blood sugar and prevent sweet cravings with cinnamon-clove tea,” he said.
REVIVE YOUR METABOLISM BY MOVING
Although the thought of exercising after New Year’s Eve seems difficult for many people, Dyt states that any movement, even a light one, will be beneficial. Yurttadur said, “Fast walks, especially in the morning if possible, will accelerate your blood circulation. This helps to remove your toxins. In addition, with exercises such as yoga and pilates at home, your metabolism will be revitalized and your digestion will be relieved.”
DON’T BLAME YOURSELF
“One of the most important things to do after this enjoyable night is not to blame yourself for what you ate and drank,” said Dyt. Harika Özkaya Yurttatur said, “Just because you eat happily one night does not mean that you have completely lost your healthy habits. “Remember, it is always up to you to continue eating a healthy and balanced diet,” he said.
