The lifeless body of William Stampfl, 58, who climbed Huascaran, one of Peru’s highest mountains, with his friends in 2002, was found 22 years later. Stampfl and his two friends, who aimed to reach the summit of the mountain, which is located at an altitude of 6,768 meters in the Andes, were buried under an avalanche during the climb. The American climber’s body was revealed on July 5, when the glaciers in the region at an altitude of 5,200 meters receded.
HIS BODY AND CLOTHES WERE ALMOST INACTIVE!
The identity of the climber, who was reported to have his passport and driver’s license with him, was quickly identified and confirmed. It was reported that the climber’s body and clothes were well preserved due to the ice and freezing cold.
1 PERSON STILL MISSING
William Stampfl’s body was brought down the mountain by guides. The lifeless body of one of Stampfl’s friends was found shortly after the avalanche, while it was learned that one person was still missing.
It takes about a week to reach Mount Huascaran, which is visited by hundreds of climbers with local guides every year.
