According to the unofficial results announced by the Associated Press (AP), no candidate reached the 50 percent threshold in the senator elections in Georgia. Under state law, a runoff will be held on December 6th.
The election was between Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker, who received the most votes, while Liberal Chase Oliver, who finished in 3rd place, will not be able to run in the runoff.
‘SENATO’S FATE MAY NOT BE DEFINED UNTIL THE ELECTIONS IN GEORGIA’
On the other hand, in Georgia, which is critical for the seats in the 100-seat Senate in the midterm elections, it may not be clear who has the majority until the second round of elections is completed.
According to the unofficial results announced, Republicans hold 49 seats and Democrats hold 48 seats. Considering that the Democratic candidate in Arizona and the Republican candidate in Nevada, which is one of the states whose results are not clear yet, is taken into account, this balance may reach 50 to 49 levels.
So if the Republicans win in Georgia, that party will get the necessary numbers to secure a majority in this house of Congress.
But if the Democratic candidate wins in Georgia, the balance in the Senate will be 50 to 50. In this case, US Vice President Democrat Kamala Harris, as the President of the Senate, will upset the balance and the majority of the Senate will remain with the Democrats.
In the elections held in the country yesterday, the people went to the polls for the entire 435-seat House of Representatives and 35 seats in the 100-seat Senate. 29 Republicans and 36 Democrats who did not complete their 6-year term in the Senate did not enter the elections. (AA)
