It was nominated for 10 Oscars and didnt win

Martin Scorsese has a penchant for long, epic films. Gangs of New York proves this, for example. The gangster flick is on TV today and lasts a whopping 166 minutes, almost three hours. Like so many of his works, Gangs of New York was nominated for many Oscars. However, he couldn’t win any.

What is Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York about?

In Gangs of New York, master director Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon) illuminates an era that has previously been relatively rarely seen in films. In the 1860s, New York’s Five Points district is ruled by gangs and shaken by their gang wars. The Dead Rabbits and Natives in particular are at loggerheads with each other. Amsterdam Vellon’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) father dies in a fight Boy swears revenge.

16 years later he returns and wants to put his plan into action. To this end he infiltrates himself with his original enemiesto take out William Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis) aka The Butcher. His friend Johnny Sirocco (Henry Thomas) helps him, but also complicates things. Amsterdam Vellon meets the pickpocket Jenny Everdeane (Cameron Diaz) and the two fall in love – to the great dismay of Johnny, who also loves her.

Nominated for a whopping ten Oscars, Gangs of New York failed to win a single one

Gangs of New York was the clear favorite in 2003 at the Oscars ceremony. He was nominated in a total of ten categories and could easily have taken some of them home with him. Nominations were made in the following categories:

  • Best movie
  • Best Direction
  • Best screenplay
  • Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis)
  • Best production design
  • Best camera
  • Best costumes
  • Best cut
  • Best Song (“The Hands That Built America” by U2)
  • Best sound
  • But nothing came of it. Instead of being able to win up to ten Oscars or even just a single award, the Scorsese film came away empty-handed this year.

Instead, The Pianist and Chicago won many awards at the 2003 Oscars. But Gangs of New York has that after all, it won a Golden Globe for best director and one for the U2 song.
