The number of victims of Morocco’s historically powerful earthquake is feared to reach up to ten thousand. Journalist Antti Kurra shows in a video why Morocco often suffers from earthquakes.

Over the weekend, Morocco was hit by the strongest earthquake in at least 120 years. The local media is even talking about the strongest earthquake in the history of Morocco.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Atlas Mountains, at a depth of 18.5 kilometers.

Earthquakes are quite common in the Mediterranean region, because the region is on the border of the continental plates. The Eurasian plate and the African plate have been in collision for tens of millions of years.

The number of people who died in the earthquake is already at least 2,862, but the number is feared to increase.

Director of the Institute of Seismology Timo Tiira anticipates that the number of victims may increase to ten thousand.
