An armed attack took place at around 10:00 local time at a nursing home in the Croatian town of Daruvar. Five people were killed and seven others were injured, five seriously. The attacker fled the scene and was caught a short time later at a cafe. Emergency teams were dispatched to the area to provide necessary assistance and conduct an investigation.
“A TERRIBLE WARNING AND A LAST CALL”
Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said the attack was an unprecedented and brutal crime, adding: “This is a terrible warning and a final call to all authorities to do more to prevent violence in society, including stricter gun control.”
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said: “We are horrified by the killing of five people in the nursing home in Daruvar. We offer our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and hope for the recovery of the injured.”
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, and believe the attacker is a veteran of Croatia’s war of independence.
