It starts in the womb, when it is not noticed… What is scoliosis, how is it treated? What are the symptoms of scoliosis?

It starts in the womb when it is not noticed

When viewed from the back, the spine should be in a straight line from top to bottom, and when viewed from the side, the physiological curvatures should be between normal values. Scoliosis is a 3-dimensional spine problem caused by the sideways bending of our spine and/or rotational rotations in its own axis.

It is seen in 2-5 percent of the population. It can be seen in people of all ages. Especially (after the menarche period), it is seen 8-10 times more in girls than in boys. The lateral curvature of the scoliosis is expressed as the Cobb angle, while its rotation around its axis is measured as the rotation angle. Although the size of the scoliosis angle and the recovery time are directly proportional to each other, there are many factors that affect the recovery and vary from person to person. The smaller the scoliosis angle, the shorter the recovery time. Physiotherapist Vedat Ülker gave information on the subject.

THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF SCOLIOSIS

There are 3 types of scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis is scoliosis of unknown origin and unknown origin. It is the most common type. In this type ‘C’ scoliosis , ‘S’. Scoliosis-shaped types can be seen. Neuromuscular scoliosis is the second most common type of scoliosis. This type of scoliosis is caused by muscle or nerve diseases. In this type, unlike idiopathic scoliosis, respiratory problems and sensory problems are more common. Congenital scoliosis is the least common type. This type of scoliosis occurs due to problems that occur during the development of the child in the womb. Congenital scoliosis progresses much faster than other forms of scoliosis.

SYMPTOMS OF SCOLIOSIS

  • Shoulder inequality-asymmetry
  • Inequalities-asymmetries in neck, back or waist levels
  • Leg length inequality
  • Lateral and/or forward curvature of the spine
  • Having low back, neck or back pain (in some cases, especially in adults)
  • Shortness of breath (decreased lung capacity), tiredness (in some cases)
  • difficulty standing upright

If scoliosis is not treated, the angle of the person may increase and later on, different spinal diseases, serious pain, heart-lung problems, limitation of movement, walking problems, cosmetic problems and serious psychological problems can be seen. In this respect, when scoliosis is diagnosed, appropriate treatments should be started without wasting time.

Some or all of the symptoms may be present in an individual with scoliosis. The severity of the symptoms also varies according to the type, angle and person of the scoliosis.

HOW IS SCOLIOSIS DIAGNOSED?

The diagnosis of scoliosis is made by the relevant specialist physician by examining the physical examination and X-rays of the spine. If the physician deems it necessary, radiographs of the patient are taken with MR or computed tomography methods.

HOW IS THE TREATMENT IN SCOLIOSIS?

Thanks to the special and effective Scoliosis exercise concepts used today, serious successes are achieved in the treatment of scoliosis. Depending on the patient’s age, weight and the condition of the scoliosis, the use of a corset may be recommended. Not all patients with scoliosis need to use a corset. If surgery is not required for scoliosis and a doctor’s guidance is given, very successful results are obtained with Scoliosis-specific 3-dimensional exercise programs accompanied by a physiotherapist. After the individual with scoliosis starts treatment, the condition of the spine is followed up by the physician periodically. The 3-dimensional exercise method is successfully applied to adults as well as children.
