It started during the Covid period: Abortion practice at home made permanent

It started during the Covid period Abortion practice at home

In order to reduce the density in hospitals, the termination of pregnancy with the pill at home, which was implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic, has been made permanent in England and Wales.

DOCTOR’S APPROVAL REQUIRED

It will now be possible for women to terminate pregnancies up to 10 weeks on the pill without an abortion and without the need to go to the hospital. For this, it will be enough for women to consult a doctor once. If the doctor deems it appropriate, the two pills required to terminate the pregnancy will be given to women for their own administration.

IT HAS BEEN USED FOR A LONG TIME IN SCOTLAND

In Scotland, another part of the UK, the practice could already be done at home. Wales also made this decision earlier in the year, but it became official this week when it went into law.

EVERYTHING IS REGISTERED

According to the law, doctors can determine when and under what conditions women consult them; how they approached themselves; women have to record when and where to take the pills.

In this application, which can be done until the 10th week, a pill is taken that stops the production of the hormone that ensures the continuation of pregnancy. With the second pill taken one or a day after the first pill, it is easier for the uterus to contract and terminate the pregnancy. Four or six hours after taking this pill, bleeding begins and the pregnancy ends.

Thus, there is no need for anesthesia or surgical operation.

Public Health Minister Maggie Throup said that with this practice, women will have the freedom to decide for themselves the time and place to terminate the pregnancy; she also said that their safety will continue to be ensured.

THE PUBLIC SUPPORTS THE DECISION

With this change, the Royal University of Pediatrics and Child Health will also cooperate in the process of terminating pregnancies under the age of 18 with the pill.

In the UK, the government made a public survey between November 2020 and February 2021 to see whether it wanted the application to be permanent. Women supported making abortion at home permanent as long as they received expert opinion and support. (BBC Turkish)
